Immersion is the ability to go beyond the surface, the obvious, the superficial. It is the ability to really feel and affect the moment, to understand life and yourself to the fullest. When you are preoccupied with time or the common trappings of time, like the clock, diary, to-do lists and strategic plans filled with timeframes and action steps, you are dancing on the surface of the moment and not playing in the powerful depths of it. It is only on the surface of each moment that the construct of time plays any role. Once you go deeper, time has no power or effect any longer. In order to heal, one has to immerse oneself in the stuck emotions and pain and allow them to dissolve. To be happy, one has to immerse oneself fully in more moments of one's life, instead of running around, skipping over the edges of it. Immersion turns life from an empty chase into one of fulfilled satisfaction. It is all about richness, quality of experience, and ultimately, quality of life. Our biggest lack thinking stems from a lack of immersion. But, if your main emotion is fear, it doesn't feel good to immerse yourself in [...]
If you wake up one morning hearing a faint song on the wind that calls out to you, the only thing to do, of course, is to follow, straining your ears to make out the faint notes, the soft lyrics. It doesn’t matter if you have other stuff to do. It doesn’t matter if other people think you crazy. All you can do is to wander off to seek that song, while you hope and trust that you will find it and that when you do, it will be all of the soul-stirring ecstasy that it hints at. You’ll probably get lost or stumble a few times. You will definitely feel both lonely and scared. No one who wanders off their comfortable, beaten path escapes these eternal companions of the road. You certainly will wonder if you are doing the right thing. But the song that you are hearing is the sound of your soul and it is calling you. This... this breath of courage and intrigue is your life - not all the mundane practicalities, to-do lists or day-to-day responsibilities. You have to let go of all that you have been or could be and allow the adventure to [...]
25 January 2018 There was a dead seal on the beach today. A sad husk, dark and sombre against the light sand. It was almost as if the waters wanted to deliver to me a message of death and decay. In the midst of an unprecedented drought here in the Western Cape where I live, it is no surprise if that is indeed the message, I thought to myself. I saw a video the other day about an old Native American woman telling the story of how she'd talked to the water that started coming from the ground under her house, and how it listened to her request and flowed in ways so as not to flood her neighbours, or shed. I took off my shoes and as I grounded myself in the energy of the earth and stepped into the ankle-deep waters of the playful waves, I remembered her story and decided to try and connect to the water. And a curious dance quickly happened, a joyful barefoot tango between girl and ocean, an ebb and flow, give and take. I asked the water why it has chosen to stay away, why so little rain was falling. In answer, [...]
This weekend, I gave a talk to a lovely group of Annique consultants who wanted to kick off their 2018 in high gear. I told them my story, how I came to write a book and how hard and rewarding that was. The journey of putting your head down and keeping on keeping on, despite all of your doubts and misgivings... We spoke about the power that lies in "Consistency", what it means and how to apply it to your life, and your business in order to achieve harmony, coherence and for it all to hold together well. Here is a video about the principle. So tell me, how can you start applying it to your own life, leveraging its power to get closer to your dreams? You can check it out on Youtube here. I'd love to hear your thoughts.
When is it being held? Firstly, it is a three-hour workshop being held in Somerset West, on January 16, from 14:00 to 17:00. You can book by emailing email@example.com. Cost per person: R250. What is a time-travel workshop exactly? The American physicist John Wheeler once said that time is what stops everything from happening at once. We experience time flowing in a pretty linear, ordered fashion, only in one direction, likened often like a river flowing past from one side to the other, only ever able to touch the part that is right here. We experience time like this because of how we evolved, and learned to survive as humans, and also because of the ordered nature of the Big bang the fact that there is a higher statistical likelihood of things going from ordered states into disordered states. It is all very confusing and complicated. But time actually does not exist on its own but forms part of a four-dimensional grid of space-time. And space-time looks more like a 4dimensional map than the river we often imagine it to be. And just like New York, Paris, Cape Town and Rome are all locations on a normal map, the [...]
Welcome. Come to this space, and just centre yourself here. Wherever you are, become present in your body, in this moment in time. We are on the cusp of welcoming a new year, but this year more than ever it is important to let go of the year that was and to welcome the new energy cleanly. 2017 was a tough year. In a way, we're all suffering from a bit of PTSD. We witnessed scary, upsetting, disjointing, chaotic things. The pace was fast and disturbing and there were lightning bolt shocks to the system. We've all been beat up by the year that was. In truth, it was a bit like an ongoing mugging. There was a lot of fear, uncertainty and dismay about the chaos that is happening in the world. So take a deep breath with me, and feel where that feeling of 2017 is centred in your body. For me it is a black tightness in my solar plexus, that almost feels like your breath being caught in your throat. A gasp of shock, a frisson of electricity and dismay. It is hurt and pain and disappointment. Send love and kindness to that place. Breathe light into it. Keep breathing [...]
There is a mathematical theory which states, in its simplest form, that small events can lead to many unforeseen big events, and because of that compounded effect of a very small initial change or event, you cannot predict anything when you are dealing with complex systems. It is known as the Chaos theory, or also in popular culture as the Butterfly effect which says that a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil can impact weather patterns which can later lead to a tornado in Texas. It applies to things like weather systems, the stock exchange and even how our minds work. One of the most vivid memories I have of this in action was one day when I was still in school. My dad and I were watching South Africa play test cricket against India in our small TV room on the farm. Let me set the scene for you. Behind us was a window. In front of this stood a bookshelf which was filled, instead of books, with bonsais and other potted plants. The sun was shining warmly through this window… In front of this was the couch we were seated on, with the TV in front of us. Because [...]
I had a weird dream this morning. Mind you, now that I’m paying attention and writing them down immediately upon waking I have realised that I have weird dreams most mornings, but this one was especially weird and somewhat funny. I was in a parking garage being chased by a little, neon-green, poisonous, Dinosaur; and this creature was named Beef Wellington, I kid you not. The Dinosaur bore some striking resemblance to those Venus fly trap plants, especially around the mouth area, but it was a cartoon. In my dream, I successfully evaded the scary little cartoon from pre-history and got in my car. Then, driving down the road I got pulled over by some cops who told me that the headlights on my vehicle need replacing. “No fine, but you have to change the headlights, M’am”. Looking up the subconscious meanings and symbolism behind some of these things were very interesting. For one, Dinosaurs represent outdated attitudes and old ways of thinking – and in this case, it was poisonous. And headlamps represent how we look towards the future. So, I was being chased by some poisonous outdated attitudes and ways of thinking that no longer serve me and then [...]
